WonderRoot, Living Walls and Dorian McDuffie Team to Launch Paint Big: A Youth Murals Program

WonderRoot, Living Walls and Dorian McDuffie are partnering with the City of Atlanta Office of Recreation to offer a new youth arts initiative, Paint Big: A Youth Murals Program. Over the course of a five-week period from June 10, 2011 – July 22, 2011 10 artists and 6 artist assistants are working with youth in the City’s Camp Best Friends at eight recreation centers across Atlanta to develop, design and install murals. Neighborhood recreation centers range from Kirkwood to Pittsburgh to Adamsville. Participating artists include both Living Walls and WonderRoot artists. They are Adrian Barzaga, Joe Tsambiras, Nathan Tavel, Peter Ferrari, Jason Kofke, Liz Turner, Reese Dillard, Faatimah Stevens, Jabari Parker, and Corey Barksdale. During the course of the program, students will learn about both mural design/installation and video production. In order to document and share the program with the public, the students, ranging from age 5 -18, are using video cameras to capture their experience as artists. At the culmination of the program, on July 22, the footage will be screened at a celebration ceremony at Zoo Atlanta. On Friday, August 12 at Kibbee Gallery, the ten artists will participate in a group exhibition as a precursor to Living Walls Conference 2011.
